Windows 11 tests an internet speed check in Quick Settings

Microsoft announced an integrated speed test and phone controls in its October 23 Insider update. These are Experimental previews, not features promised for every PC.

When a video meeting freezes, checking the connection often means opening another website. In its October 23, 2026 announcement, Microsoft introduced a Windows 11 preview that brings that check into Quick Settings. The result appears inside the panel rather than sending you to a browser. The important qualification is that this is an Insider Experimental feature, not a change promised for every Windows 11 computer.

The connection check moves into Quick Settings

The Experimental Build 26340.9767 notes describe starting a test from the Speed test tile, the Wi-Fi or Cellular flyout, or the network icon menu. Windows shows download speed, upload speed and ping inside its own panel.

The practical benefit is less window switching before a call or while checking a large upload. It does not make the connection faster or change your broadband plan. The numbers in Microsoft’s screenshot illustrate the interface; they are not a promised result for a particular laptop or internet connection.

One result does not explain every stuttering call

A measurement describes a connection at that moment, not the overall quality of a computer. Downloading a large file and keeping a meeting steady are different tasks. A high download figure alone cannot tell you why a particular call still breaks up.

For a useful comparison, record when and where you tested and which connection you used, then repeat under comparable conditions. Start troubleshooting with Microsoft’s Wi-Fi guidance or our laptop connection checks. A single low reading is not, on its own, a reason to buy more memory or replace a laptop.

Phone controls join the panel too

The announcement also introduces Mobile devices for a connected phone. Supported Android devices can offer ringer controls, Do Not Disturb and a sound to locate a nearby phone. Initial iPhone support is more focused on status information, rather than the same complete set of controls.

For someone working between a PC and a phone, these are small interruptions the panel might shorten: preparing for a meeting or finding a phone left on a desk. They do not mean Quick Settings replaces every phone application. Check the controls available on your actual pair of devices rather than treating the example image as universal.

Why an up-to-date laptop might not show it

An Insider preview and a broadly released Windows feature are different things. Microsoft’s Insider channel documentation explains that Experimental features may reach selected groups first and that stability can vary. Joining a preview channel is not a guarantee that every announced feature appears at once.

This report is not a confirmed general-release timetable or a test for whether a new or used laptop is missing something. Owning Windows 11 Home or Pro, or buying a recent computer, does not by itself establish that the device has received this particular preview.

What matters on a daily work computer

There is no need to move a study or work laptop to an Experimental channel just for an extra network button. Balance a convenient shortcut against the stability you need for applications, peripherals and your schedule. A separate test computer is a more suitable place to explore early features.

When buying, keep software news separate from the hardware decision: check the actual configuration, display, connections and applications you need. Our laptop range lists available models, but Windows 11 on a product page is not a promise that its new Speed test has arrived. Any later general-release announcement should be checked separately.

            Conclusion

Putting connection checks and short phone actions into Quick Settings could make a familiar laptop workflow more convenient. For now, the key word is preview: follow the development, but do not treat these controls as default capabilities of every Windows 11 PC.
