iPhone AirDrop not receiving photos? Check before resetting

A missing recipient does not establish a faulty iPhone. Review both devices, receiving permissions and the confirmation required by their iOS versions.

You are standing beside someone to share photos, yet AirDrop does not show the right name or the transfer stalls. Examine both devices instead of changing only the sender. One ordinary sample photo and an agreed recipient can help identify the failing step. A network reset or account sign-out is not the place to begin before checking who is allowed to receive files.

1. Start with a small, controlled transfer

Apple's AirDrop instructions call for nearby Apple devices with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled on both, and Personal Hotspot disconnected if active. Check both sides. Internet access on one iPhone does not establish that the other is ready to receive.

Use a sample photo without customer or identity information and ask the recipient to watch their device. If one photo works but a group does not complete, record that distinction. AirDrop serves Apple devices; a Windows laptop is not a suitable receiver for testing this function.

    2. Check who the recipient allows to send

The iPhone User Guide's AirDrop section says a contacts-only recipient needs the sender's Apple Account email address or phone number in the contact card. Saving a name without the relevant account information is not the same condition.

For an agreed transfer between people not in each other's contacts, review Everyone for 10 Minutes on the receiving device. Return to an appropriate receiving scope afterwards. Confirm the sender directly, particularly in a busy shop or classroom; an unexpected request is not necessarily the transfer you are waiting for.

      3. Follow the confirmation for your iOS version

Apple describes an AirDrop-code step for sharing with someone outside your contacts when both devices run iOS 26.2 or later. The recipient obtains the code and the sender enters it. Do not mistake that version-specific confirmation for a failure or expect identical prompts on older software.

Exchange the code only with the intended person, not in a public comment. If your screens differ from an older tutorial, note the model, iOS version and stopping point. Remove private information from any support screenshot. Describing a photo-transfer problem does not require sharing your Apple Account password.

        4. Ask the recipient to open the actual photo

Confirm the sample opens and contains the intended image. Then send the necessary group and check the received result. This catches a wrong photo or recipient as well as incomplete transfers. A success indicator alone does not replace checking the file you meant to share.

If the fault repeats, record whether discovery fails or a selected transfer stops, and whether it affects one recipient or several. A restart at a suitable time can be another controlled test. Avoid combining unrelated resets, account changes or data deletion, and ask the appropriate support team before altering managed configurations.

          5. Rehearse sharing when inspecting a used iPhone

Bring an Apple device you are authorized to use and a non-private photo to test the intended iPhone. Note the software and receiving setup. A successful sample is useful evidence for this task, not proof that every hardware function and account condition has been checked.

Browse TECHBUY iPhones and the iPhone 15 and 16 options below. Compare condition, capacity, battery information and the applicable warranty separately. Choose a transfer method suited to the receiver rather than expecting AirDrop to work with every computer or phone you own.

            Conclusion

Check both devices, connection requirements and receiving scope first. Send one sample, follow the relevant confirmation and open it at the destination. This is a more focused beginning than resetting the network simply because a name is missing.
