A black camera preview just before a meeting does not automatically mean the webcam has failed. A shutter, keyboard control, selected input and access permissions can belong to different layers. This Windows 11 guide starts with checks outside the software, compares the Camera app with the meeting app, and then reviews permissions. If the meeting is urgent, tell the organiser and use a backup route before attempting time-consuming changes.
1. Check the shutter and camera controls first

ASUS camera troubleshooting instructions cover lens obstructions, a privacy shutter and a camera key where fitted. Some models use F10 or Fn + F10, but this is not a shortcut for every laptop. Read the key symbol and your model instructions before pressing it.
Inspect the display bezel in adequate light. Does a protective film cover the lens, or is the privacy slider closed? Move a shutter gently as designed; do not pry it with a sharp object. If the preview stays black with the cover open, record that result rather than removing the bezel to look for a cable.
Also check the call video button. A crossed-out camera icon may simply mean video is off inside that app. For a USB camera, check the connection before changing access settings for the built-in camera.
- Do not assume every laptop from one brand uses the same camera key.
- Do not force a slider or dismantle the display bezel.
- Distinguish the call video button from a laptop camera switch.
2. Compare the Windows Camera app with the meeting app
Open Start, search for Camera and check its preview. Microsoft uses this comparison to isolate app problems. If the camera works in one app but not another, review the app settings before reinstalling drivers. Close the Camera test window before returning to the call.
Record two results: whether Camera shows an image or an error, and whether the meeting app shows an image, denied permission or no device. A working Camera preview with a blocked website does not justify a complete driver reinstall. If both report an error, keep its message for the final step. This is a troubleshooting comparison, not a complete hardware health test.
If you have a USB webcam or virtual-camera software, compare the selected device name in the meeting video settings. You may be testing the built-in camera while the call uses another input. Change one selection at a time and check the preview before moving on.
- Camera works but the meeting does not: check the input and meeting permissions.
- Both report an error: record it and inspect system access and controls.
- Close other recording or meeting apps before retrying.
3. Review the correct Windows permission category

Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Camera. Microsoft camera permission documentation describes Camera access, Let apps access your camera and listed-app switches. Desktop software has a separate Let desktop apps access your camera setting, not an individual Windows switch for each desktop app in that category.
A browser missing from the individual-switch list is not proof that the software has vanished. Review the desktop category and the message on your machine rather than editing Registry entries to add its name. Ask IT about a greyed-out switch or organisation policy instead of removing management controls.
Microsoft explains privacy exceptions, including Windows Hello and desktop applications. Face sign-in working is not proof that the meeting app has camera permission, and the permission list is not a complete software audit. Use trusted software and review access for your actual requirements.
- Do not allow every app merely to make troubleshooting quicker.
- System Camera access and a website grant are separate settings.
- Ask IT before changing restricted settings on a managed laptop.
4. In Chrome, check the meeting website too
In Chrome, open Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Camera. Review the selected camera and allowed or blocked sites. Google camera instructions explain changing the default device and allowing a blocked site. Use the actual trusted meeting address, not a camera-test link supplied by a stranger.
Google site permission guidance explains that you can change a site grant without changing the default for every site. Read the visit-specific choices shown in your version. An organisation-managed browser may require the administrator to change camera settings.
After a change, check the preview before entering the meeting room. If the call has selected a disconnected USB webcam, choose a connected input instead. Save unfinished forms or work before reloading the page, so a camera check does not also lose a meeting session or an unsent form.
- Check the meeting domain, not just its logo.
- Review the browser camera selection and the call video setting.
- When Windows Camera works, investigate the app or website first.
5. When should you check updates or contact support?
Microsoft recommends the Get Help camera troubleshooter on Windows 11 and notes that waking from sleep is not a restart. If the earlier checks fail, save your work and restart properly. Use the official troubleshooter and read its result before deciding on a driver change.
If the problem began after an update, note the timing, camera name and any Device Manager message. Obtain a driver for the exact model from the manufacturer or follow suitable technical support instructions, rather than using a package advertised to fix every webcam. Do not change BIOS, remove drivers and disable security together: you will lose track of what changed the result.
For support, provide the laptop model, Windows version, a redacted error screenshot and the Camera-versus-meeting test results. For a future purchase, read how to test a laptop webcam and microphone. Record a camera issue separately from Bluetooth headphones connected without sound.
- Save work before restarting or applying updates.
- Do not share passwords, verification codes or other participants' meeting images with support.
- Seek warranty or technical help for damage or repeated failures instead of dismantling the laptop.
Conclusion
Keep a clear order: camera covers and controls, the Camera app, Windows permissions, then meeting input and site access. Change one factor at a time and record the result. If these checks do not resolve the issue, that evidence is more useful for support than a machine on which several drivers and settings were changed at once.
