An iPad for course reading, annotating PDFs and video calls does not have to be the newest model. Used iPad Air 4 and Air 5 both offer 10.9-inch screens and 64GB or 256GB options. The useful question is whether you need the Air 5 M1 and more flexible front camera, or would rather save money for a Pencil, keyboard and sound warranty.
For writing, test the Pencil and actual display
Apple comparison specifications give both devices a 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display at 2360 × 1640 pixels. To see whether it suits study, open one of your own textbooks, write in its margin and try a browser beside it. The size is flexible for notes, but it cannot replace all the space of a laptop for a wide spreadsheet.
Apple lists the 2nd-generation and USB-C Apple Pencils for both models. Pair the exact Pencil you plan to use, draw near the edges and confirm whether the Pencil, tips and keyboard come with the quoted price. Do not infer included accessories from a photograph.
The front camera matters for online teaching
Air 5 has a 12MP Ultra Wide front camera and Center Stage, which helps keep you framed as you move. Air 4 uses a 7MP front camera and does not list Center Stage. That can matter if you teach, present or move around a whiteboard. If you stay seated, test the picture in your own room before paying extra.
Prop up the tablet at your normal desk angle and check microphone, speakers, Wi-Fi and room lighting. A used unit with faulty audio or camera can disrupt class more than the generation name.
Is M1 worth it for your tasks?
Air 4 has an A14 Bionic; Air 5 has an M1. Both can serve reading, notes and lectures when the unit is sound and your required apps still support it. M1 offers more hardware headroom for layered creative apps or heavier work, but it does not imply one fixed speed gain across every task.
Both came in 64GB and 256GB capacities. Check how much space your current photos, offline documents and apps occupy; 64GB can fill quickly with recorded lectures. Compare the variants actually available, not a 256GB Air 4 against a 64GB Air 5 as though storage were equal.
Inspect the used device before handover
Examine light and dark screens, test touch at every edge, use Touch ID and check USB-C, Wi-Fi, cameras, speakers and charging. Ask about battery condition, body bending, repairs and the warranty for the precise iPad supplied.
Ensure the prior owner account is removed and you can set up the device with yours. Match capacity, Wi-Fi or Cellular version, colour and accessories to the order. Once the price difference is clear, actual condition may matter more than one chip generation.
