1. Start with the way each phone feels
Apple lists the Pro at 6.3 inches, 71.9mm wide and 204g; the Pro Max is 6.9 inches, 78.0mm wide and 231g. The Pro is easier to operate with one hand; the Max provides more room for photos, maps and a video timeline. Your hand, case and pocket matter more than the diagonal measurement alone.
Try the postures you actually use: reading while standing, typing with one hand and shooting landscape video. Test with a case if you will use one. Extra screen space is valuable when you use it often; repeated hand repositioning may make the smaller Pro a better daily companion.
2. Read battery figures as test results, not a promise
Apple rates video playback at up to 31 hours on Pro and 37 hours on Pro Max; streamed video at up to 28 and 33 hours. These are Apple test figures, not the hours you should expect while filming, navigating, gaming and using 5G together.
The Max advantage matters if you spend long days away from outlets or film frequently. If you work near power and value easier handling, a maximum playback figure alone need not decide the purchase. Both support the same published fast-charge benchmark; Max does not make a charger unnecessary.
3. A larger body does not mean an exclusive camera
Apple lists the same three 48MP Fusion rear cameras—Main, Ultra Wide and Telephoto—and the same 18MP Center Stage front camera for both. Each offers a 4x telephoto and an 8x optical-quality telephoto option. A buyer interested in distant portraits or ProRes video does not need the Max to access a separate set of lenses.
The Max can make framing and editing more comfortable through its larger display and battery headroom. If a listing claims that only the Pro Max has 8x telephoto, check Apple’s official specifications. Actual image quality also depends on light, camera mode and technique.
4. Compare like-for-like storage before comparing prices
