The 12.9-inch iPad Pro M1 is appealing for its spacious workspace and Liquid Retina XDR display. A used device, however, cannot be judged by the display name on its box. If you want it for HDR media, image work or drawing, spend a few minutes testing the actual panel, then inspect the parts that might add cost later.
How is it different from the 11-inch M1?
Apple lists the 2021 12.9-inch iPad Pro with a mini-LED Liquid Retina XDR display, 2732 by 2048 resolution and ProMotion. The 11-inch M1 also has ProMotion but uses an 11-inch Liquid Retina display. Both use M1 and support Apple Pencil (2nd generation); choose the 12.9-inch model for screen area and display characteristics, not because its chip is automatically faster.
The larger surface helps when a drawing, reference image and tool palette must sit together. It also takes more desk space and is less compact to hold for long periods. Try it in your real posture, especially if you take handwritten notes away from a desk.
Test the screen with your own work
Open a photo whose colours you know, a white document and a dark scene with subtitles. Look for unusual bright or dark spots, colour uniformity and the edges of the display. HDR material can show why XDR appeals, but do not expect peak HDR brightness from every ordinary website or document.
Draw a continuous line across the panel, test finger touch at the edges and check response when rotating it. If you use Apple Pencil, pair a compatible one and test charging. Seller photos cannot reveal every touch issue; some appear only when you draw or write.
Inspect the rest of the used tablet
Test Face ID, speakers, microphones, cameras, Wi-Fi, the Thunderbolt/USB-C port and battery condition. Ask about cosmetic marks, repairs and accessories actually included. If the screen has been replaced, request details and verify the affected features before committing.
Make sure the previous owner account is removed so you can set up the device with yours. Match the listed storage, Wi-Fi or Cellular version, warranty and condition of the unit to be delivered. A lovely screen in a photo does not make up for unclear device history.
Who should choose 12.9 instead of 11 inches?
Lean toward 12.9 inches if you usually work at a desk, need room for files, palettes or two windows and use content that benefits from XDR. Lean toward 11 inches if you carry and hold the tablet more often. Larger is not inherently more professional.
Compare used units with similar storage and condition, then include a Pencil and keyboard if needed. Paying more for the large display makes sense when its area actually changes how you work.
